Kossuth County contains roughly 159 drainage districts with numerous sub-drainage districts within those 159. The Board of Supervisors serve as Trustees for nearly all of the districts in the Kossuth County.
Drainage districts have been established for the drainage of surface waters from agricultural and other lands for the protection of said lands from overflow when said protection is a public benefit or is conducive to public health, convenience, and welfare (Section 468.2, State Code of Iowa). Districts are comprised of all landowners within a particular watershed and therefore bear the responsibility & costs for all maintenance, repairs and improvements.
